Definitely one of the main antagonist in the life of someone who deals with writing as a profession is writer's block. And when it attacks, you can either fight it or surrender to it. I've seen a lot of people who fell to their knees because of this dreaded condition.
If a farmer has unproductive months, a writer has an unproductive period, which can last for a few hours, couple of days, some months or for many years. In serious cases of writer's block, writers may even leave their profession and abandon their careers.
There are many reason why writer's block occur. The most common would be stress. When a person is stressed, their mind is unavailable to process things properly. Your mind is more occupied telling your body to rest than commanding your hands to write a piece.
Another would be the lack of inspiration. This reason itself has many cause. It could be due to an unhappy relationship or a relationship just came to an end. Or it could be someone who you value died, a sense of failure, financial downturns, series of misfortunes, physical illness, depression and a lot of others.
More often than not, writer's block becomes a serious problem to many people in the profession mentioned. For full time writers, a writer's block could cost them their living. It could result in heavy financial losses. For those doing it for the sake of art, a writer's block could mark an end to a person's search for artistic touch in their lives.
As many as the reasons for this condition, there are also many ways to counter writer's block. For one, you can go out and meet new people and get new inspirations. Amaze yourself with other people's talent. You can also join organizations and groups and improve your social life while gaining inspiration from the people you meet.
Explore places and things you haven't been, haven done, haven't seen before. Put your creative juices to work by taking notes of what you did for the day and constructing them to award-winning literary pieces before going to bed.
Keep yourself healthy. Eat properly, drink enough water, make yourself comfortable, in what you wear, where you go and what you do. Reflect on yourself once in a while, review your achievements and your failures, and learn from them.
Most importantly, listen to music. It certainly will put you in the mood for some good working.
