Good records, great portfolio is definitely a plus when it comes to finding a job whether you're applying for a company or simply looking for opportunities on the web. However, like what my sister said when I asked her about the qualifications future applicant to her firm will need to reach, good portfolios and experiences matter, but not necessarily be flamboyant.
There are some companies or individuals who hire people not based on their previous work, previous employment record or good portfolios (work/education). Some people hire their next applicant based on the preliminary examinations or the 'initial test' given to the applicants.
Some employees are even hired because of their Cover Letter attached to their résumé or CV and not because of their educational attainments or skills, you just have to find the right boss with the heart.
When it comes to qualifications, applicants are put into three categories: under-qualified, qualified, overqualified. Lacking or not related experiences in your application paper may lead to the former and latter categories.
I've seen people who weren't able to finish any degree but are successful in their respective fields. On the other hand I've seen graduate students with Masteral degrees on their list of achievements and yet jobless, not because they chose to, but because they don't fit to any job that's available, or a job that is demanded by the trends.
If you're one of those who hasn't finish schooling for personal reasons, keep on striving. If you've finish school with great degrees or done jobs with great performance, then good for you. Don't lose hope in finding a job that suits you. The best thing you can offer yourself and the best you can offer to your future job is honesty, determination and perseverance.
