Is the HP Slate Apple iPad's Worst Nightmare?

03/11/10 18:39

When the iPad was released, a lot of people speculated that it will be a laptop killer after it was marketed that way, showing how it can do almost anything your laptop can do. However, after its unveiling, it turned out it's not good enough.

And although the iPad is still not making a huge name for itself after it was unveiled probably because of the 'incompleteness' of its features, its market is now being threatened by another tablet, the HP Slate. It's a little ironic to recall the rumors regarding the iPad's name before it was released. iSlate is one of the names that surfaced.

The HP Slate, although not yet released, is a potential threat to the iPad in many ways.

First, it runs on a Microsoft Windows operating system, the Windows 7. Windows being the arch rival of Apple's family of operating system, the Mac OS X, is already a ground for comparison between the two gadgets. Fans of both will surely get head-to-head defending their bases.

Slate running on Windows gives it features that cannot be found on an iPad. One of these is the Slate's ability to run Flash. It's been said many ways, a lot were turned off from the iPad because of this feature (or lack thereof). Apple wanted its users to rely on apps rather than run Adobe on their gadgets.

So the biggest advantage of the Slate over the iPad is the Flash, enabling you to watch embedded videos, play Facebook games and other flash games using AIR applications.

I just learned from my hubby that Apple iPad is playing videos from youtube. I even saw his profile pic with an iPad on his hand surfing facebook. I am kinda hesitant at first of having an iPad as a personal tablet due to this major drawback (not supporting flash). Instead, I am waiting for the release of HP Slate that will be coming out 3rd quarter this year. (I used to work for HP and they even gave me a notebook as a reward, hahahaha!!!)

I immediately surfed the net for possible reasons on why Apple is not supporting flash, and luckily, I got a piece of Steve Jobs press release on his thoughts of Apple not supporting flash. Steve Jobs is a good marketer and a passive critic. With his thoughts, Apple stresses that Adobe is a closed system because all the applications that developer can use must be purchased solely at Adobe Systems Inc. only which is particularly correct. This has been responded by Adobe that through their systems, developer can make a single application and make it run on all other platforms since most of the platforms support their system. Very hilarious!!! As a developer myself, I've tried creating various apps and trying to run on another platform but my God, compatibility issue sucks!!!

With regard to the battery life, Apple has a good point that when playing videos from the net, video decoding must be at hardware level because software decoding takes much of the battery life. In this case, Adobe fails to highlight that they don't even have support for html5 or h.264 (correction: just recently supported, according to their website). So my hubby is correct, that iPad plays videos on youtube because of this decoding style (html5 and h.264 support). I heard HP slate will only lasts for 5hours or less and this particularly because HP slate supports flash, which is a software level decoding. Hahahaha!!!

Adobe has good points too, however, it can't overshadow the points of Apple, and in the first place, Adobe is being used by almost all technologists because they offer seamless operations but they fail to realize that there are even more advance users who want innovation, more powerful applications and system designs. Adobe is being used by almost all companies because of their acclaimed popularity, however, Apple remains strong on their quest of providing their consumer the best of the best.

I just laughed on how Adobe reacted on Steve Jobs thoughts on the Adobe website. It reads: I love flash, i love html5, i love all platforms, i love choice. Now, if Adobe stands firm with the banner they posted in their website, it's also a choice of Apple consumer to choose Apple as their brand. Bloggers posted differently on why Apple doesn't support flash should give Apple a chance on how to educate their customers about their platform and system designs.

Apple is a company most often hit by critics. Don't critics think that because of their black propaganda, Apple is acclaiming great market potential? Apple is not revengeful, instead, they just develop their way on how market will love them. I love Apple, I love them!!!
