Most households nowadays owns a laptop or two, and still keep their old desktops working. If you are no IT person, you will settle with setting up a wired internet connection for all since most desktops which were made years ago do not have their own wi-fi cards installed.
One way to get your desktops working along with your laptops, aside from using a wired router, is to use an installable wi-fi catcher, and usually uses a usb-mounted device with an antenna. But buying a router and a separate wi-fi receiver device like that can be very expensive.
What I do to synchronize my internet usage with my laptops and my desktops is by using a 2-in-1 wired and wireless router. Most IT stores nowadays offer devices like those which enables you to use both wi-fi and wired connection.
What you have to do is to configure both the wired and wireless settings using your preferred browsers. Just go to your Command Prompt and type 'ipconfig'. Write down your Default Gateway IP and type it on your browser address bar. The router settings will then appear.
On Operation Mode, choose Gateway and apply changes. Use WPA as encryption, change the connection name and put your personal password to secure your connection. Supply the needed date on the LAN Interface Setup, leave the default settings on the other.
Finally, check Router Status. The digits must look exactly the same as the digits when you did the ipconfig.
Check if your desktop has connection. Finally, check your laptop if its able to connect. Now you have both wired and wireless connection.
