Perhaps one of the greatest problems that a freelancer will have to grapple with is time management. Yes, it does sound odd because freelancers chose to be freelancers mainly because they wanted to become free with their time, free when they want to work.
But that is the problem here. Sometimes, when there are no regulators as to how you will manage your time, there is the tendency to procrastinate and leave what can be done now for a later time. This is not only harmful for your business. It is also harmful to you as a person if it becomes a habit.
So how do you deal with it? There are a number of suggested ways, but only a few have succeeded. Let's try a different approach this time around. Use habits to your advantage.
What exactly do we mean by this? Instead of making it a habit to procrastinate, why don't we make it a habit to do work every single day--even if there are no assignments at hand. This means that if you are a freelance writer, make a different article every day about practically everything under the sun. If you are a freelance graphic artist, then why don't you make a new artwork every day?
To be successful at this, you will have to know what time of the day you work best. It differs from person to person. For some people, they are at their best right after they wake up in the morning. If you are of this type, make sure that you do what you have to do at the first moment of your day. Some others, on the other hand, prefer to work in the night, when everybody else is already sleeping. If you are of this type, then don't force yourself to do work until the sun sets.
By forcing yourself to doing your work everyday, you will be forced to have this habit of work, productivity, and more work--and that also means a bigger and better portfolio for you, too!
