Twitter.com has millions of users worldwide. It seems like everyone is using it. From normal people, to politicians to famous celebrities. But there is a big question people are prompted before they follow an account. "Is this the real person I wanted to follow?"
Well, Twitter answered that already. They recently launched Verified Accounts. This means notable people using Twitter will now get a badge showing their account is verified giving a sense of relief to followers verifying who they are following is genuine and real.
One example is Oprah Winfrey's Twitter page. Oprah is a famous celebrity, an icon that many people wants to immitate her. There are a couple of other Oprah Winfrey account for sure, but the one with the Verified Account image means she is the real one.
The Verified Account is currently available only to celebrities and notable people. It is not yet clear if the feature will also be available to businesses who has a Twitter account or be available to everyone. This is a nice move from Twitter, however, there are questions that need answers regarding this new feature.
How sure is Twitter that the account is real? What if a hacker found a way to get his account verified and scam people?
Twitters motives for launching the Verified Account feature is obviously good for their users. But they have to show the people how this will be done. If they will not be able to successfully label a person as a celebrity or a famous one, well I guess I'll be seeing some bruised egos.
